The Memory Game

Theresa has fallen in love with the memory game! Every night as the twins nurse to sleep, she talks me in to playing a game with her. And she is getting good! Now that she can easily beat me, I've started to wonder how she does it. Well the other night she let me in on her secret. She figured out that the backs of the wood pieces are different and she has been memorizing the patterns in the wood! Now she knows that one of the pig pieces has this sort of line on the back and one of the dog pieces has a sort of swirl. I was amazed! All this is from a 4 year old! She was and is mighty proud of herself.

But that wasn't the end of her chicanery. Last night we are playing again and I'm talking with her about her "trick". Pointing to a piece I say, "So, Theresa, this is the pig." She nods her head. "And this is the other pig," I ask pointing to another piece. Again, she nods her head, this time with a slight smile that I didn't understand at the time. I continue on with my talking, trying to compare her "reading" the backs of the pieces to the "reading" of words. After finishing my diatribe, I continue with my turn of the game, totally forgetting the "pigs" that Theresa had pointed out earlier.

Of course, I turn up two pieces that don't match. Theresa, now with a sly smile and a mischievous giggle, turns over the two pieces pig pieces that were definitely not the two pig pieces she had pointed out earlier! "I tricked you," she said. "I didn't want you to get those pieces, so I pointed out the other ones."

Wow! I just had to sit back and chuckle.
